BOXING DAY, LESS AND LESS POPULAR
The traditional Boxing Day shopping is becoming less and less popular, according to a recent survey conducted by the Conseil Québécois du Commerce du Détail (CQCD).
The amount of spending and the number of Quebecers who planned to participate in the post-Christmas sales decreased. In fact, 27% of Quebec’s adult population (1.8 million consumers) planned to take advantage of post-Christmas sales, compared to 33% (2.2 million consumers) in 2016, and 34% in 2015.
This loss of popularity is due to the growing trend of shopping on the long weekend of Black Friday through Cyber Monday. Indeed, consumers are gradually neglecting Boxing Day to participate in the long weekend of November. According to a CQCD survey, 42% of Quebecers participated in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this year, an increase of 7% over 2016. Quebec consumers prefer to shop during the Black Friday period in order to take advantage of discounts before Christmas.
However, in downtown Montreal, on December 26, the frenzy did not show that Boxing Day was less popular.
